THAKUR SATYANANDA CULTURAL SOCIETY & ACTIVITIES

Kalpataru Baul Gosthi

The Baul are a group of mystic minstrels from Bengal which includes Indian State of West Bengal and the country of Bangladesh. Bauls constitute both a syncretic religious sect and a musical tradition. Bauls are a very heterogeneous group, with many sects, but their membership mainly consists of Vaishnava Hindus and Sufi Muslims. They can often be identified by their distinctive clothes and musical instruments. Not much is known of their origin. Lalon Fokir is regarded as the most important poet-practitioner of the Baul tradition. Baul music had a great influence on Rabindranath Tagore's poetry and on his music.

Though Bauls comprise only a small fraction of the Bengali population, their influence on the culture of Bengal is considerable. In 2005, the Baul tradition was included in the list of "Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity" by UNESCO.

Thakur Satyananda Cultural Society has established a “Baul Gosthi” of “Baul Group” with the help of local participants who have a flair for Baul songs. It’s a effort to ensure that old Baul Songs are preserved and sung by the Bauls of today. Every evening, “Kalpataru Baul Gosthi” comprising of a very interesting heterogeneous group of Daily Labour, Gold Smith, Crane Operator, High School Physics Teacher, Businessman, School Teacher, Car Driver and well recognized School Inspector who is also a Post Graduate Degree Holder in mathematics come down to the Ashram for their evening practice of different songs and instruments.

Famous Baul artist, Sri Lakhman Das Baul, Sri Tarak Das Baul and his son Kangal Khepa are the chief mentors of Kalpataru Baul Gosthi. It also subtly work on preservation of the forgotten genres of Bengali songs such as (1) Baul Songs (2) Laloon Geeti (3) Mahajani gaan (4) Bhatiyali. Different rare musical instruments are also available for the artists to sing and practice.

We aim to present our Baul Group to different competitions and prestigious platforms for them to perform. It is one of the most loved group in the organization.
